Favourite Muses of 2010

This year-- has been my favourite, and I think it may have to do with the music that was released. The music released this year was bold, brave and interesting. All the artists that I have listened to this year have had in their own way manifested themselves into my 2010 memories. I made an effort to expand my music collection and pleasantly found new artists to become utterly obsessed with.
My most cherished memories of the music in 2010 are associated with the shows that I attended.
- Having blindly bought a ticket to CocoRosie's show in Vancouver, it has made me an avid and hopefully permanent admirer.
- Seeing Matt and Kim live made me so appreciative of their efforts to keep in touch with fans.
- Having witnessed the magic that is Sufjan Stevens in a seated theatre, I can safely say that I want to steal his dance moves.
- Dancing at the Scissor Sisters outdoors show in the rain brought new definition to "Skin Tight"
The shows I attended this year were by far the most exciting and musically moving -- they also include
Pheonix, You Say Party, City and Colour, Tegan and Sara, Coeur de Pirate, Stars, Joanna Newsom, The National, Metric and I also have to include --- The incredibly funny Margaret Cho.
---------------------------------------------------

I thought about doing a "Top 10 Albums of the Year" type of list... But that seems to leave out so many albums. So I decided to mention albums which have helped me through hours of transit travel, walks to and from school, and down time where the only sounds I would allow myself to hear were the noises from my headphones. Music.
Here are some records I kept on heavy rotation in my headphones and in some respects, I can safely say have helped me through stressful periods between and during College classes.

1. ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS - SWANLIGHTS
FAVOURITE TRACK: GHOST

I was so excited to hear Antony's album Swanlights. Antony's vocals has always had a profound effect on me. I turn into an emotional bubble and find it difficult to comprehend how such beautiful sounds can come from this one man. His piano melodies and powerfully unique vocals bring a persuasion in which I can only attempt to dissect. This album was one of the highlights for me this year, the album as a whole was a great record to listen to while traveling. The added scenery to this epic music is recommended-- Antony takes you on a journey. Where you will end up is entirely dependent on your own personal experience with Swanlights.

Antony and the Johnsons - Swanlights

2. BEACH HOUSE - TEEN DREAM
FAVOURITE TRACK: ZEBRA

Brilliant. Great new discovery for me, I thoroughly enjoy this album. The raspy vocals and melodic instrumentation make for a feel good album full of sentimental songs about love, loss and life. Reminds me of the 90's, nostalgic.
Beach House

Beach House - Zebra

lk3. BEST COAST - CRAZY FOR YOU
FAVOURITE TRACK: HONEY

A friend of mine recommended I listen to Best Coast, I took her advice--- and I am so glad I did. I was ranting about the lack of current female fronted rock bands and here is a band that gives me hope. Entering the indie pop/rock music scene in 2009, their lo-fi sound and fuzzy yet raw vocals clash with electric riffs and drum beats. Their first full-length Crazy For You makes me excited to hear more. They remind me of Hole or Garbage, they're reminiscent of that spirit of strong female leads-- and it makes me like them all the more.

Best Coast - Honey

4. COSOROSIE - GREY OCEANS
FAVOURITE TRACK: SMOKEY TABOO

I was a casual listener of CocoRosie before their album Grey Oceans was released. Having seen them live, I see the appeal. What attracts me to their music is not so much their musical skill. They are not fantastic singers. It's who they present themselves to be that attracts me to their work. Their persona's are what draws me in, their stories are what I attach myself to, their performances are what I try to grasp. They are anti-conservative, radical, non-conventional thinkers, the perfect traits of artists. Their first three records pulled at my heart strings in ways I can't explain, their songs are full of fantastic stories about fairies, animals and obviously, their experiences. I will always associate the year 2010 with the re-introduction of CocoRosie into my music collection. I became an avid music listener of their experimental instrumentation which melts imperfectly into Bianca's sing-speak raps and Sierra's operatic vocals.

CocoRosie - Smokey Taboo

5. LISSIE - CATCHING A TIGER
FAVOURITE TRACK: IN SLEEP
Her vocals are killer, so good--- I like to describe it as dirty country.
Melting classic-rock-blues-country.

Lissie - When I'm Alone

6. FENCES - FENCES
FAVOURITE TRACK: MY GIRL THE HORSE

Chris Mansfield's music makes me so sad most of the time. Sometimes though, the sadness in his voice and music brings across a sweet disposition of tender loving lyrics and self-deprecation. You need an even amount of both those binaries to function properly--- or else, you'll be so damn sad, you'll find yourself lying on your floor curled up in the fetal position crying silently to yourself with Fences' music coming from your headphones.

Fences - Girls With Accents

7. FOUR TET - THERE IS LOVE IN YOU
FAVOURITE TRACK: ANGEL ECHOES

His latest release brings about sounds of electronic beats mixed with delicate hums and mutters.
The first song on There Is Love In You titled "Angel Echoes" left me speechless. I was in a place of tranquil and stillness. It's euphoric, and brings my imagination to places where only hope, happiness and Utopian ideals exist.
Is that crazy, that this one song can make me feel this way?
Four Tet continues to create music that moves listeners and brings across a calm. This is an ideal album for running, if you're going someplace and need a soundtrack, There Is Love In You is perfect.

Four Tet - Angel Echoes

8. LIGHT ASYLUM - IN TENSION EP
FAVOURITE TRACK: DARK ALLIES

I first heard Shannon Funchess' vocals in another Brooklyn band called Durty Nanas. They embody block parties and community celebration. Light Asylum is her project with another musical partner her electronic yet eerie songs are translated into this EP. Although it is only four-tracks long, the songs themselves have feel good beats, mixed with dark and subversive lyrics. I remember listening to this on long transit rides, the songs are so upbeat yet lyrically dark.

Light Asylum - Dark Allies

9. MELISSA AUF DER MAUR - OUT OF OUR MINDS
FAVOURITE TRACK: 1000 YEARS
I think I would describe her sound as strong, catastrophic and chaotically unique.

Melissa Auf Der Maur - Out of Our Minds

10. THE NATIONAL - HIGH VIOLET
FAVOURITE TRACK: CONVERSATION 16

I finally had the opportunity to see The National live this year. They certainly delivered a show full of their antics, Matt wringing his fingers--walking awkwardly on stage alongside a full band with perfect musicality. Did I forget to mention that his baritone vocals carried out across the entire audience-- it gave me goosebumps. This album was one of my favourites this year and I played High Violet on rotation for months.

The National - Lemonworld

11. PERFUME GENIUS - LEARNING
FAVOURITE TRACK: LEARNING

Delicate piano melodies -- muttered vocals reminding me of Sigur Ros -- lyrics are quirky and sentimental. What is there not to like about a debut album full of personal tragedies, loves and ultimately - sentiments.

Perfume Genius - Learning

12. SHARON VAN ETTEN - EPIC
FAVOURITE TRACK: PEACE SIGN

I fell in love with her 2009 release Because I Was In Love and was so excited to hear she would release this album this year. What drew me to her music was ultimately her songwriting. They are heart-felt and full of emotion, this is carried across in her whispered-vocals. I can't even bring myself to try and describe her music. You can listen to her DAYTROTTER SESSION, it's almost perfect.

Sharon Van Etten - NPR Tiny Desk Concert

13. JOANNA NEWSOM - HAVE ONE ON ME
FAVOURITE TRACK: GO LONG

I saw her play live for the first time this year.
I sat in my chair on edge for most of the show.
I listened to the delicate and profound sounds coming from the musicians on stage.
I loved her music even more after I saw her live.

Joanna Newsom - '81

14. THE JEZABELS - DARK STORM EP
FAVOURITE TRACK: A LITTLE PIECE
From Australia - With Love

The Jezabels - Dark Storm

15. JONSI - GO
FAVOURITE TRACK: BOY LILIKOI
For all things Jonsi, you must visit his website - and perhaps browse his Media section

Jonsi - Go Do

Wainwright Does it Right

Rufus Wainwright
The Centre in Vancouver
November 26th, 2010

The Vancouver Sun Review
Photographs from the evening

Upon entering the theatre hall the opener Teddy Thompson was already on stage.
I was excited to see what Rufus had planned for that evening. The first half would be an applaudless performance with enticing projections on a huge backdrop. The songs performed were, I felt a commemoration to his mother, Kate McGarrigle who passed away early this year. A grand piano, and a spot-light on a caped Rufus Wainwright were the only visuals on stage, with the addition of the projections of a gothic, dark eye, opening and closing. In a word, the imagery was eerie. His performance included songs from his most recent release All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu. I admittedly had not heard it, but was pleasantly surprised at his earnest performance, it was dramatic and emotional. His musicality, vocals and piano = Perfect.

In the second portion of the night, we applauded after every song. The stage was littered with candles, romantic. He played favourites and crowd pleasers as a lone performer at his piano. In truth, all he needs is his piano and voice. It was outstanding, his range of vocals and melodies. It was a more light performance in contrast to his caped persona. He came out in an outfit that screamed "I'm right here!" and sang songs that commanded us to listen, watch and wait intently for that one line that would lead to to applause. His energy was contagious, his charm and wit between songs made the audience chuckle. The night was full of class and operatic-like tunes from Rufus.
Even when he was pulling a nose hair out of his nose.... he still has class, all bundled up into what makes an envious talent.

Rufus is a true performer who adds just enough drama to keep listeners wanting more.
He is on a North American Tour --- Check for dates on his website HERE

I Need Some Diamond Rings

This is my 100th post.
This is a celebratory post.
I celebrate this post with the help of Diamond Rings. Check it.

The Biltmore Caberet
November 20, 2010
Doors 7 - Show at 8 - Curfew at 11
Diamond Rings + Human + Teen Daze + Dbl. Dragon

The Biltmore
The venue was a great space for live music - great selection of seats - bar - warm decor and colours - all of this centred around the main stage. The state of the art sound and light systems provided exceptional sound the entire night. Was pleasantly surprised.

Dbl. Dragon
They opened the show with a set just under 30 minutes with catchy dance-rock-pop tracks. They had 2 drummers and it absolutely made their sound come across. The drummers and vocalist were delivering an impressive performance. Great sound, performance, music. It warmed everyone from the freezing chills outside.
Was probably my favourite act of the night, after Diamond Rings - o'course.

Teen Daze
Experimental band from right here in Vancougar played a 30 minute set full of synth driven tracks. Their sound reminded me of dreamy walks in the dark streets on Vancouver. They created a mood of calm, yet their sound had just enough drums, guitars and beats to have the audience dancing -- drinks in hand.
I was impressed. I'll definitely make an effort to see them play again.

Human
Two members took the stage before Diamond Rings and played electronic heavy songs backed by heavy basses. Interesting experimental, electronic sound balanced out with guitars, and vocals. They seemed to have the longest set... it may have been the excitement that was making everyone antsy in anticipation for the final act.

Diamond Rings - Website + Myspace

Diamond Rings' LP Special Affections was released October 2010 on Secret City.

Based out of Toronto - His electronic - experimental - 80's inspired sound recorded on this LP receives an impressive review from PITCHFORK ---

His performance at the Biltmore was surprisingly the shortest set of the night. It may have been due to the ridiculous curfew of 11pm that the venue set. Diamond Rings took the stage at around 10:30 and play a 30 minute set filled with his syncopated rhythms and beats playing from his macbook, and him on vocals and electric guitars or keys. The audiences' excitement was palpable and everyone body swayed, feet shuffled, body rolled with arms pumping for the entire set.
He graced the stage with gold glittery spandex leggings, and face make up that screams fierce!
I can't recall the order of the songs performed, but am sure he played Show Me Your Stuff, Something Else, and Wait & See

If you have the chance, absolutely check out Diamond Rings, he definitely puts on an energetic show - you are sure to have a fun time.

Stars May Have Lost Their Shimmer?

Stars
The Vogue Theatre
Nov 4, 2010

The last time I saw Stars perform were on Nov 17, 2007 at the Commodore Ballroom.
That was a great evening, the sound was mixed well, the audience was enthusiastic and the live music was enjoyable.

I expected the same type of show at the Vogue Theatre. Admittedly, I hadn't quite listened to their new album Five Ghosts to a point where I had all their lyrics memorized as with their previous release. But nonetheless I was looking forward to a good show.

A friend and I went to Guu Gardens to grab a bite to eat before the show. We saw Amy Milan and crew seated in the restaurant as well. I soon found out as the night progressed that it would be the best moment of that night. A simple sighting completely trumps the show.... let me tell you why.

Once we set foot into the theatre we decided to stand up by the stage.
Once the opener Young Galaxy began I immediately felt uncomfortable... was it just me or was the sound coming from the speakers distorted?
My body core was vibrating so extremely that I felt anxiety rise in my chest.
Usually the bass/drums would cause our clothes and selves to vibrate and move. This usually happens at any live show were the instruments and vocals were mixed well. I was expecting this.
Instead, the sound of the keys and synths created waves of nausea to set inside me.
The sound was so unfortunate and it really ruined the night for me.
I could hardly hear the vocals -- the sythns and keys were TOO loud, guitars not loud enough. I didn't think the sound was mixed well at all. I'm not an expert, but I could have used more vocals.

To add to my discomfort with the sound, the audience really did not help. One in particular thought that claiming space would, what, give them more wiggle room for their very slim body type? I would love to forget this night ever happened. I've been to enough shows to understand that concert etiquette is not hard to understand. Don't push in front of people and increasingly make a point to claim more space. What an irritating experience.

This is not to say that Stars' performance was lacking at all. Visually Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan had great stage presence. They were full of energy and were both great performers. Torquil was working up quite a sweat, needless to say it was very "rockstar" like. Amy Milan worked the stage in 4 inch heels, we later found out that she's 5 months pregnant! I had no idea, she was glowing on stage.... and that may be why. They played old songs and new had great energy, they also had an small intermission midway through their set and played 2 acoustic songs. It was magical.
It was a great show to watch and be absorbed in. Unfortunately the sound, for me anyway, really brought the night down.

Maybe if Stars were to come to perform in Vancouver again on their next leg of their tour --- I may consider going if they were to play a different venue.

(It's funny because some of my favourite concert memories were at The Vogue Theatre, Joanna Newsom - Amazing. ---- I don't know what happened this time around. Was it the venue/sound/band? --- maybe just my ears?

Lights, Dance, Music - Sufjan Style

(Check out the Amazing outfit! Photo from Here From his show in Vancouver 2006)

Sufjan Stevens
Orpheum Theatre
October 26, 2010

I've been a casual Sufjan listener. I can't recite his tracklist off by heart. I can recognize songs, and its hooks. And that's about as much Sufjan knowledge I have.
To say the least I had no idea what to expect from the concert.

The show began at 8:30 - the opener played 4 songs. It was a lovely 25 minute musical interlude of vocals, guitars, claps, and snaps all looped into a massive sound. I though it was a little disorienting and found myself thinking of hallucinogenic dances around camp fires.... I don't know where this association came from. To say the least, the audience really responded to this opener and clapped, cheered for him between songs.

Just after 9:00 Sufjan Stevens came on stage. The applause was deafening.
During the entire show brilliant projections of Sufjan , his dancers, animated shorts were shown on the backdrop. I really enjoyed the visuals, it added a different dimension to the show.
The music was mixed perfectly, the 2 drumsets. 2 backup singers/dancer, 2 trombones, 1 pianist, 1 keys/sound effects man, 1 bass, 1 electric guitar and Sufjan and his multiple instruments all blended together, without one overpowering the other.

His voice --- His VOICE was on point.
In short, the show consisted of choreographed dance moves, impeccable vocals, projected visuals, great live band = one of the most visually and musically interesting shows I have ever been to. It was a pleasant surprise, for sure.

Women in Rock?

I spent the last month and a half working on my women's studies group presentation.
Our topic of debate/discussion was "women in rock".
We decided on focusing on this statement. "While women in mainstream rock are still claiming less space, women in indie rock are making great strides."

Throughout the course of all our meetings, discussions, brainstorms we concluded that there just isn't enough music fronted by women out there.

As an avid music listener I honestly was a little shocked, but all together not that surprised that mainstream radio is completely dominated by men.

I suppose that's why indie rock, pop, dance, punk exists. It creates and allows an avenue for those female (and male) musicians out there to create music and not be completely marketed, enthralled and controlled to death by one of the 4 major record labels out there.

Its such an interesting debate and I've spent the majority of this month thinking about it.
I love that when I look at the albums that I buy, or listen to, that a lot of the artists are female.

I think its a matter of personal taste. It takes a specific person to search for music elsewhere. Mainstream radio just isn't providing enough of a variety in terms of role models. Listen to the peak 100.5 fm. It was my favourite radio station when it came out a few years ago. But now once I actually listen to the songs.... most of them are sung by men. An hours worth of the peak, maybe even two hours, and you'd be lucky to hear a female musician on the radio.

The songs all seem to blend together, the voices of men all in the same vocal range, it really creates a specific perspective on music to only provide such a small variety.... I think so, anyway.

Since we're on this topic.
Here is a list of female fronted/backed/supported musicians.

Matt and Kim - A Pocket Full of Sunshine

Matt and Kim
Rickshaw Theatre
September 27, 2010 - 9:30
The So So Glos

How do I begin to describe this...?
Remember my post way back about Matt and Kim, where I wrote that I thought they were the most fun sounding pop-punk band around? And how they make me want to dance and smile at the same time? Well all of those things are true and I was fortunate enough to attend their show here in Vancouver at the Rickshaw Theatre.

It was Amazing. I can't describe it as anything else. It is by far the most fun, energetic, HOT, musically on point show I have ever been to. Matt and Kim came on after 10:00pm(?) and began their set. Their stage design consisted of some sort of multiple square electronic screens arranged in a triangle... The lights and colours set a fun and energetic mood for show. I am horrible at remembering setlists, but lets just say they began and didn't stop until just before midnight. They played fan favourites, and then some.

Their equipment was set up so close together, so snug. They really work off of each others energy, they were giving it all they have and we were soaking it up and giving back just as much energy. Our sweat, shout and cheers.

One moment I'll remember is when they began playing "Better Off Alone" by Alice Deejay... it's a Classic 90's dance song, we all danced, screamed, cheered. We all reacted as one collected unit, we all felt something. In that moment in time we all were present. Kim jumped onto her bass kit and sang, egging us on. I screamed the lyrics along with her. She has so much energy and looks like she has so much fun on stage. I couldn't stop grinning, it's contagious.

The crowd was so enthusiastic, there were several crowd surfers.. one audience member decided it would be a brilliant idea to stage dive into the audience. He did it twice, from the stage. Entertaining as ever.

At one point in the show, Kim threw balloons out into the audience, we blew them up and tossed them about. It's a party after all, balloons are a necessity, essential in making a good show. We tossed them about. Kim came out to the audience between one of their songs, the audience grabbed her feet and she proceeded to do a booty dance. This is why I love her.

I had no idea it was Matt and Kim's second time in Vancouver. I am so glad I was there today. My ears are still ringing, my body must have lost a good chunk of water weight. I haven't been in an environment that humid, that lacking of air for a while. I think this show trumps CocoRosie's show at the Vogue Theatre in June. There was much more body movement, feet shuffling, leg jumping, arm pumping, head rocking at the Matt and Kim show. Brilliant.

They played Daylight as the encore and last song. Epic.

After this they, Matt and Kim, jumped into the audience hugging anyone with open arms, while hip hop songs played over the speakers (Empire State of Mind - Jay Z, Forever Young.... and so on). They are amazing musicians, amazing people with amazing hearts. They appreciate their fans and it means the world to me, as a fan to see that. You attend so many shows where the musicians escape into a back room after the show. They slip through a side door and would Never reach out to a fan this way. But Matt and Kim do.

Come on now... what is there not to love about Matt and Kim. There are SO many reasons to attend their show. One, because you had to be there to know just how good the show really was.

I was smiling from ear to ear and still am.
I'll be thinking of my favourite moments in this show for a long time to come.
And of course wearing their t-shirt until they come around again.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CocoRosie played a Daytrotter Sessions in August and it has become one of my favourites. So beautiful and strange, yet wonderful and magical. Their contrasting voices melt perfectly together and their eclectic instrumentation creates a musical world unlike any other. I think they are Brilliant. I hope you will too.
--------------------------------------
The Moon Asked the Crow
Fatherhood (Unreleased)
R.I.P Burn Face
Lemonade
Fairy Paradise -- (So Good)
DAYTROTTER

I have talked about CocoRosie endlessly to anyone who would listen to me rave about their music. I think this session is perfect in introducing new listeners to their music. At the core, it's really their music that makes them so unique... or maybe it is who they are as artists, performers, musicians and fairy hunters. I find their entire persona, character, music so interesting and inspiring. If I were brave I would assemble myself to be somewhat outrageous. Whether it be through clothing attire or make-up, speech or expression. I think CocoRosie have in their own way perfected that for themselves.
Until then I can only feign courage by wearing something like this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carrie Brownstein's new band WILD FLAG.
Along with former Sleater Kinney drummer Janet Weiss, Mary Timony, and Rebecca Cole. We can expect an album out early next year.
Facebook them HERE

Also, to prepare ourselves for Wild Flag I suggest you go NPR.ORG and listen to the live Sleater Kinney concert, they performed at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C, this was recorded on August 3rd of 2006.
They played for nearly 2 hours... I can only wish that I could have been there. Listening to it now, I can only describe it as epically dirty. Which means it's something everyone should have a listen to. Close your eyes... and have your own little air guitar-drumming session right there in your bedroom. Go Ahead.

Remember When We Were Teenagers?

Tegan and Sara
Malkin Bowl
September 24th, 2010
You Say Party, Christopher Smith

It's my 6th maybe 7th? time attending a Tegan and Sara show. I think having seen so many times... has kind of dulled out the actual live experience for me.

But nonetheless, they are what remind me of my high school memories, as cheesy as it sounds, after a conversation with a few friends who were also in attendance at the show we all concluded that they really had a part in our teen years. I feel old.
And after seeing them live so many times... its hard to be surprised by their songs. It's their banter that keeps us coming back.
I have blogged extensively about Tegan and Sara, be it about shows I've seen or how their records make me feel.... So I think this entry will be a little different, a little more indirect and obscure... expect tangents and going off topic.

I feel obligated to attend their show, in support of their music and also who they are. It's just what you do when you owe someone your teenage sanity, I suppose. I could potentially go into detail about their setlist and performance... but you can read a review from the Vancouver Sun HERE.

Walking into the venue we were just in time to catch You Say Party's set. I have been a fan of theirs for a while now and seeing them perform again (the last time was opening for Phoenix) was a pleasure. I loved their energy and stage presence, Becky was adorable and her vocals were brilliant. So Good. I recommend a listen. Go Here

When Tegan and Sara came onstage I got that feeling... the one you get when you know you know you're going to see something good... something you may want to remember. They started the set off with acoustic songs, Call it Off. Interesting. It gets better. I haven't been to a standing show of theirs for a long time and I forgot how enthusiastic the crowd is, not physically excited.... just vocally. In all of their acoustically driven songs, their vocals were almost indistinguishable from the sing along accompaniment of the audience around me. Mostly younger teens and first time fans. It was adorable.
I had a moment where I thought to myself.. was I ever that fan? Was I ever so excited that I sang so loud I couldn't even hear my own voice afterward? It made me smile and all the while this was happening inside my brain Tegan and Sara continued through their setlist. I felt as if I knew what to expect as each song was played I had somehow trained myself in the weeks, months, and years I had conditioned my ears to recognize and memorize song lyrics off of The Con and So Jealous and If It Was You and so on. I mouthed and bopped my head along to the songs almost as if I was expectantly waiting for the next verse, chorus, bridge...
In truth I hadn't listen to a Tegan and Sara song in a few months... but the lyrics all came back to me, as if I had never removed them from my iPod.

The things I will remember from tonight:
- The audience - Their uninhibited attitude made me enjoy the show more. Don't get so uptight.
- Banter: Ghost - Demi Moore Haircut - Justin Beiber Associations - Swinging a jacket open to acknowledge a breast to prove non Transman status - Teen Audiences - Eye Contact - That's What She Said - The South America Turtle being High Maintenance - Being Happily Single
- Encore of Divided - One of my first favourites.

I found this setlist of the show.

Dance in the Rain

I have never danced in the rain.
I'm a bit of a hypochondriac, I always think I might end up with pneumonia.
Today I danced in the rain, and I loved it.

Scissor Sisters
Malkin Bowl
Outdoors
September 16, 2010
Lights and music and dance and sounds

The moment I walked into the venue with a friend we found shelter underneath the trees away from the rain. We recoiled from it, like it was a bad, bad smell. We worried about our clothes and especially our hair. We just could Not, get our hair wet. Why? Because when wet it impairs us... Let me elaborate, we both wear rimmed glasses... not only are we visually impaired enough, add a lot of blurry rain drops and now it looks like we're looking through a blurry spyglass, we see shapes and lights blurred together... sounds trippy doesn't it? Not when we're trying to catch glimpses of the members of SCISSOR SISTERS.
Jake Shears, Ana Matronic, Babydaddy and Del Marquis. They were all fabulous.

When Scissor Sisters took the stage at around 8:30 after their two openers, Sammy Jo and Casey Spooner, I quickly became soaking wet and was consistently blinded and impaired by both my hair and my misted glasses. Nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I shuffled my feet, moved my body and kind of - danced.
I had an amazing time dancing to their songs off of their newest album Night Work, Ta Dah and their Self-Titled.
The setlist included (In no particular order) Night Work, Any Which Way, Skin Tight, Fire With Fire, Something Like This, Skin This Cat, Nightlife, Invisible Light (all from Night Work) I Don't Feel Like Dancing, She's My Man, Kiss You Off (From Ta-Dah) Take Your Mama Out, Comfortable Numb and Filthy/Gorgeous.

The sound at Malkin Bowl was amazing, the lights and lasers really added to the atmosphere of the show. Despite the rain I kept myself warm by dancing. Jake Shears and Ana Matronic worked the stage like no other, they are true performers and Jake braved the cold rain topless for a few songs before deciding that its better to be practical than fashionable and donned a black raincoat... this although did not hide his leather leotard-type outfit he had on. I was impressed by their live vocals and was smiling from ear to ear most of the time. I love their pop-disco-dance music and hearing their songs live really made me adore them even more!

One of the best moments of the night: When Ana Matronic took off her heels and put on her "running shoes" lower heels. Brilliant.
Another highlight also included: Ana Matronic announcing that the Malkin Bowl had a serious design flaw, (the stage not being covered from the rain). Hilarious.
Also: Filthy/Gorgeous deserves a mention. It was the first song I heard from the Scissor Sisters. I immediately became hooked. Their vocals are infectious and it was almost intoxicating. Confetti, glitter and lasers galore.

Until they return to Vancouver for an (Indoor) show, I will think back fondly of their show tonight. Walking home wet, cold and shivering was absolutely worth it.
My ears are still ringing.

Wow. Check out the photos from the show here. Amazing!

It's Quiet Company: Spiders

Who: The National
Venue: Malkin Bowl
When: Sept 10, 2010

So walking into Malkin Bowl I made my way to the merchandise table. Let's say I like to keep something to remember the shows I've seen. The last two shows that I've been lucky enough attend didn't sell artist merchandise, CocoRosie and Joanna Newsom, which was a disappointment. I vowed to make stenciled shirts instead. That project probably won't happen too soon.
In any case, The National sold about 6 different designed t-shirts, a beach towel(It was tempting), vinyls, albums, tote bags, I enjoyed their selections but settled for one tee.

The Walkmen opened the show and was already playing when I arrived. They were mid-set and really reminded me of The National... hm. The same pant-suit outfit, the same sing-scream lyrics... They set a mood which kept us eager for The National to take stage.

The National took to the stage at approximately 8:30, opening with "Anyone's Ghost," Phenomenal. They played songs from Boxer, Alligator and High Violet. We all shuffled our feet, bobbed our heads, moved our arms; with our hands deep in our pockets. The outdoors venue was an interesting setting. All of us had jackets, scarves and toques on. The open space created a sort of unpleasant echo and ring that went off a few times during songs. The songs seemed to keep us warm... well for me at least. Watching Matt Berninger from the audience was brilliant. He's an artist, and somewhat awkward performer that really made us all appreciate the musicality between band members. Berninger stood on stage wringing his hands, punching the air, bending over and squirming between and during songs as if to release some sort of inner demon. It was divine, his mannerisms, I was intrigued and also taken.
My body was shaken by his deep echoing voice, I got chills.
The set included Terrible Love, Slow Show, Fake Empire, All the Wine, Secret Meeting...
In the encore they played Lemonworld, as well as Mr. November. It was a perfect way to spend my Friday.

The highlight for me:
Squalor Victoria: The last couple minutes always leave me with chills, the song builds into a great climax. Loved it.
Fact of the night: Matt also goes by "Dick Jagger" and "Panic Room."

Apologies for the fragmented thoughts. My mind is exhausted.

It's "Music Friday"...

Cho Show

I saw Margaret Cho Perform last night.
I laughed a lot, and it felt great.
My cheeks were sore from smiling so much by the end of the night.
Its hard to describe the show, there were so many moments I want to remember.
To sum it up:
Georgian Accents, Italian Vogue, Olive Oil explosions, and Dick, lots and lots of Dick references.

Ian Harvie opened the show just before Margaret.
I remember thinking, "What a gorgeous man." Only to find out he's a Transman. Brilliant
I loved his set, he was a great opener, his jokes had me holding my sides.

Laughing Pains?

The title describes accurately just how I feel whenever I watch any of Margaret Cho's DVD's. I usually end up nursing my aching sides curled in the fetal position... catching my breath inbetween fits of laughter.

Having been a long time fan of Margaret Cho's work I can't describe how excited I am to be seeing her perform finally. Tonight.

Who: Margaret Cho
What: Stand Up Comedy, Laughing Fits
Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver BC
When: August 28th, 2010
Why: Why the hell Not?

I remember the first time I saw her stand up. Just a little 2 minute monologue, I don't remember much of what she talked about. I just remember seeing her, an Asian woman, who could articulate so well exactly what she meant. And I remember laughing. From that moment I immediately loved her. Her work, what she stands for...
I think, without even meaning to, I found some sort of comfort in her visibility in the media. Being a visible minority myself, Asian/female I think I immediately put myself in a box.. well Margaret kind of took me out of it, just a little bit.

Just a little video to prepare me and maybe you for her show tonight. =)

Soko

Her name is Soko. Find her here MYSPACE
She is a French singer and actor.
Her voice reminds me of a child, mixed with Joanna Newsom tendencies.
I remember last summer... when her song I'll Kill her (I'll Keel Her) became my iPod anthem.
I love her accent when she sings, speaks; lulling the listener with her twisted and quirky stories.
As childlike as her voice is, her songs usually deal with pretty serious and heavy topics. As emotionally filling the songs may be with anger and rage, there are such sweet sentiments littered in her songs. It's endearing. Who can't relate to loss of a love?
I'll Kill Her specifically talking about how her prospective lover won't have her, but chooses a "bitch" over her, so she inflects that she'll "kill her". Good riddance, he wasn't worth it anyhow.

Soko - I'll Kill Her (Live)

Dances in Summer

I've been listening to a lot of Men, Hercules and Love Affair, Scissor Sisters and Jessica 6. Well, in actuality Men and Jessica 6 have yet to release an album that I can attain... So I have been listening to youtube recordings. Which for the most part isn't so great but when you search for what little music there is out there finding a few great videos make my night.
Jessica 6 Myspace
Jessica 6 in particular consists of New York based musicians. Andrew Raposo, Nomi Ruiz, Morgan Wiley, and Jim Orso
Nomi Ruiz who is formerly of Hercules and Love Affair, showcases her impressive vocals in Jessica 6. Listen.

Be Like MEN?

I am a biological female. Girl, Lady, Chick, what have you.
I find myself drawn to music that in one way or another involves musicians who are female as well. I don't do this consciously, but when I look into my CD collection, or my iTunes, I find an abundant of artists, musicians, singer/songwriters who happen to be well... female.
This is not to say I don't appreciate music made by men. So when I discovered this band called MEN some time around their emergence into the music scene last year, with JD Samson of Le Tigre I thought to myself, what a perfect balance of male and female. Just have someone who well embodies both genders. I love it.
MEN MYSPACE
Introducing: Ginger Brooks Takahashi, JD Samson, and Michael O'Neill
Together they are a Brooklyn-based band whose dance music embodies the aspects of performance art, radical politics, sexual fluidity as well as bringing to their show an essence of live music mixed with a real art show.

Their music is also brilliant. Go take a listen. And listen again, and again, and again.
Then go buy a ticket to their show in your city.
They are coming to Vancouver's The Media Club on September 9th.... and I am not of age, being just one month away from the legal age is upsetting me, inside. It's frustrating to know that I can't go. BUT don't think that I won't be dancing in my room to tracks by MEN that night and maybe every night until then, because I will.
Feet shuffling, arms waving, body rolling ensues.

Men - Be Like This

I dare you to listen and try not to dance. Go Ahead.

I Need Some Lemonade Right Now

It's 30 degrees Celsius outside, and feels like 40 inside.
I can't move without breaking into an uncomfortable wetsuit state.
I feel stuck to my body.
I need some lemonade right about now.

Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom at the Vogue Theatre, Aug 5 2010. Skot Nelson photo

Who: Joanna Newsom
Where: The Vogue Theatre, Vancouver
When: August 5th, 2010 - show at 8pm
Why: 18th Century sounding music that makes us breathless

I arrived at approximately 8, upon entry I noticed that there was very little merchandise. Vinlys and LP's I was hoping to buy a t-shirt I can wear proudly.
The opener was Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes armed with a selection of 4 guitars he sung songs with vocals healing from years of smoking abuse. His performance was interesting in its quirky-folk melodies and strong and surprising vocals.

During intermission I chatted up my neighbour (Euen/Ewen) to ease the anxiety we both felt being seated 2nd row and just meters away from Joanna.

Once Joanna set foot on stage I was blown away from her opening rendition of '81. Brilliant. I sat holding my breath throughout the songs afraid to move an inch in fear I may miss a note, a movement, a sound from her and her accompaniment. In short the show certainly was not lacking in grandeur and thus full of brilliance. Hearing the songs from Have One On Me was a treat and I think the live versions have a place in my ears for a long time to come. It was a pleasure to hear Peach Plum Pear and Inflammatory Writ from The Milk-Eyed Mender and Monkey Bear and Cosmia from Ys. Some of my favourites were played last night and I still find it difficult to put into words exactly how speechless I still feel. Go Figure.

Setlist:
'81
Have One On Me
Easy
Cosmia
Soft As Chalk
Kingfisher
Inflammatory Writ
Go Long
Good Intentions Paving Company
Monkey & Bear
Peach Plum Pear
Encore: Baby Birch

Celebrate the Aging of Canada

Interestingly enough in celebration of Canada's 143rd Birth date. I ventured to the Cloverdale Arena. It was mostly uneventful, with the exception of a 40 minute performance by Dragonette.

Lets Discuss Radio Music

When Akon's single "I Wanna Fuck (Love) You" was first released I was so morbidly disappointed that a song about a man's desires and venture to Fuck a stripper would be played on the radio. The word, meaning, action of Fuck was replaced by the word Love. Suddenly we, radio listeners are subjected to a song originally written with such misogynistic intentions and sexual innuendos demeaning women into the roles of the sexually preyed on, used, perhaps abused. Lets not even venture too far into the possible truths and falsities the song describes.
----------------------
Relieved that I happen to be someone that doesn't frequent the radio dials. When I discovered Cocorosie's song "Make My Own Way" or "You Wanna Fuck Me" as a sort of response to Akon's song. Instead this song is from the perspective of the "stripper", woman.

You see me trying to smile up on this pole/ But I'm just hiding the pain that’s deep in my soul/ You wanna fuck me/ And I already know/ You wanna fuck me and toss me back on the floor

Simon, my brother, said 'i loved her'/ Should I say that he loved me/ I was in second grade, he was fourteen/ In the shady of the trees/ There was a summer breeze/ Whole thing's a blurry dream/ Behind the house quiet as a mouse/ He told me not to even breathe/ A secret hard to keep/ I didn't know till thirteen/ By then I knew what to do/ Just an old routine/ All the boys had a thing for me

You see me trying to smile up on this pole/ But I'm just hiding the pain that’s deep in my soul/ You wanna fuck me/ And I already know/ You wanna fuck me and toss me back on the floor

My mama always said 'you're the brightest star'/ In life, you're sure to go so far/ Been at this club about four years/ Hooked on dope, crying in the mirror/ When we were just little girls/ We learned to dance in mama’s pearls/ Baby bend over and shake that ass/ Hey, you wanna come home with me/ Hoping you fall in love with me/ I could make love to you for free/ We could just get a place and start a life/ And try to make things right.

You see me trying to smile up on this pole/ But I'm just hiding the pain that’s deep in my soul/ You wanna fuck me/ And I already know/ You wanna fuck me and toss me back on the floor
