COCOROSIE

Who: CocoRosie
Venue: The Vogue Theatre
When: June 24th, 2010

The last time I saw a show at the Vogue was Metric, nearly 2 years ago. It was cold, the music was great.... but it was still cold regardless of how fast I danced (or attempted to). Also three other bands played before them and I was not nearly as excited about them. Sebastian Granger and the Mountains?, The Dears, and Tokyo Police Club.

I'm glad my memories of the Vogue Theatre will include COCOROSIE. Yes, COCO FUCKING ROSIE. I arrived just after 9pm, and their opening act was just beginning her set. I can't recall her name, regrettably I neglected to find out. I'm sure music reviews will reveal that.. and then a well deserved dedication will take place. DIANE CLUCK.
She stood alone facing a microphone with her acoustic guitar. Her music is Folk, is Acoustic, is vocally impressive. She sang songs filled with sexual innuendos, I'm sure there were other metaphors lost in the moment, and also due to my inability to hear over screaming concert goers. A 30 minute set.

Just after 10, Cocorosie took the stage, and from this point on the set list and songs almost seem to surpass me.I was too absorbed in their music to actually take any pictures.. but nonetheless. AMAZING.They played approx. 90 minutes, a great set filled with all of their known songs and then some. In my opinion they sound even better live. From what I do remember I'm sure they opened the set with RIP Burn Face, I was completely astounded by their choice of attire, particularly Bianca Casady who wore a blue wig with an NYPD cap, a skin-tight body suit and purple shorts over that with a military type of jacket to complete the outfit. Just describing that now, I realize how other-worldly they are and how boring everyone must be. Maybe just me. I need to invest in some skin-tight body suits and maybe some herbal substances as well.
They had a brief music interlude filled by Tez, who beatboxed his way into our bodies and ears. The sounds he made were brilliant definitely a highlight.
This allowed time for Bianca and Sierra for a costume change, they came back onto the stage in what seemed like night gowns. Their stage presence is intoxicating.

Throughout the entire show they had visuals projected onto their canvas backdrop that portrayed images of woman in Hijabs, dancing images that were so strange, obscure it seemed to melt into the scenery. We, the audience were washed over and bathed in the striking lights and music of Bianca and Sierra Casady. They were accompanied by a pianist Gael Rakotondrabe, a beatboxer Tez, and a percussionist playing a "drumset" tied together with ropes and strings, it was all built around a baby bed frame from found objects it seems. The sounds created from this was different and inviting, unlike the usual rock drumming.

I remember that Bianca and Seirra played songs I had on repeat for months.
Werewolf, Turn Me On, Hopskotch, Tranny Power, Fairy Paradise, Happy Eyez, Undertaker and more
Favourite moment: Werewolf: BRILLIANT, a close second is their performance of Tranny Power. Too Good.
